Ultimate Series Parts
To start a company and develop a product there must be a need, there needs to be a reason and I think there needs to be a passion for that particular thing. The Product your offering must also be substantially better than what’s on offer.
I’ve served in the Royal Marines for over 25 years, 23years as a Vehicle Technician working on many vehicles both land and amphibious based. Re-Engineering, rebuilding and fixing has always been the way. Why did something fail, how can we make it genuinely better so it doesn’t fail again?
The Land rover Defender was my bread and butter for many years but it was always the Series Land rover that caught my eye. Too expensive to buy and not fast enough back in my youth but it was always on the cards to rebuild one in the future. I’ve built and restored many cars over the years ranging from a Full Fiberglass body Hill climb Triumph Spitfire to the humble commuter Reliant Kitten.
The time finally came 5 years ago to restore a Rare Series 3 Recovery Truck Twin cab. Â It went mostly as planned but at almost every turn there were issues with the quality of replacement components.
I turned to a company called ACR to help with this and they were great, the vehicle was finished and sold far too quickly. Giving me less time than I would have liked to enjoy it but knowing I’d do another in the very near future.
The time I spent driving and working on this vehicle made me fall deeper in love with the Series Land rovers but there were still some annoying niggles. Even with the ACR components improving power, performance and reliability. There were still some parts that are just not good enough quality.
In 2023 I Started a Motorcycle Performance Parts Company for Triumph Bonneville’s (Ultimate Twin Performance LTD). This has been an amazing success and the lessons learned from this has directed me back to the lovely Series Petrol engine. It’s such a sweet unit but unfortunately its let down by parts mass produced to the lowest price that fail quickly or are not designed for this engine.
I originally Designed this EFI kit just for myself but the more I worked out the details and looked at what else was available on the market I quickly realised that this kit I had designed was cheaper than the others on the market, will outperform and will also outlast the other kits. Our kit is totally accessible by the owner which helps with fast easy to see fault finding and is a complete package, fully adjustable.
Other companies have bolted parts on and hoped for the best but with us this kit is specifically designed for the Series 2 ¼ petrol engine.
The ability to remove cheap and nasty underperforming parts which fail far to early like the distributor and points. Carbs warping through cheap materials and distributors not weighted correctly for the ignition curve. The list goes on but replacing these Items with high end, top quality reliable components will improve performance, reliability, efficiency and most of all confidence in the vehicle.
Being able to turn the key and it start every time for every day reliability is our goal.
We will also offer fitting either at our workshop or on your own drive way at home. We will also be on hand to assist you in fitting the kit yourself or answering any questions you might have.
We are off to the Dyno for final testing in mid-April and already have 10 kits machined and ready to go, get in touch for more details.
Engineering a Better Series Land Rover
Where It Started
To start a company and develop a successful product, there needs to be a genuine need, a clear purpose and, above all, a passion for getting it right. The product must also offer a meaningful improvement over what is already available.
I have served in the Royal Marines for over 25 years, including 23 years as a Vehicle Technician working on a wide range of land and amphibious vehicles. Re-engineering, rebuilding and problem-solving have always been central to my work: understanding why something failed, then finding a way to make it genuinely better and more reliable.
The Land Rover Defender was my bread and butter for many years, but it was always the Series Land Rover that really caught my attention. I have built and restored numerous vehicles over the years, from a full-fibreglass hill-climb Triumph Spitfire to a three wheeled Reliant Robin, but my heart has always pulled towards the Series Land Rover.
The Series Land Rover
Six years ago, the dream finally came to fruition when Lockdown gave me the time to take on the restoration of a rare Series III twin-cab recovery truck. The restoration went largely to plan, but at almost every stage I encountered issues with the quality and availability of replacement components.
The vehicle was eventually completed and sold, and the experience reinforced my enthusiasm for Series Land Rovers and my desire to move on to my next project. But spending time driving and working on the vehicle also highlighted a number of ongoing weaknesses - Even with quality upgrades improving power, performance and reliability, there were still components that simply did not meet the standard I expected.
From Motorcycles Back to Land Rovers
In 2023, I started Ultimate Twin Performance Ltd, a motorcycle performance parts company specialising in Triumph Bonneville models.
The business has afforded me the opportunity to take a deep dive into designing, developing and manufacturing performance components, a journey that ultimately led me back to the Series Land Rover 2¼-litre petrol engine. Could I apply the same principles that led to an increase in power in the Bonneville to a different kind of vehicle?
The Series petrol engine is a wonderfully simple, characterful and capable engine. Unfortunately, its performance and reliability can be compromised by some of the components traditionally fitted around it.
That presented an opportunity.
Why EFI?
Points, distributors, carburettors and associated components are now based on decades-old technology. While that is part of the charm of a Series Land Rover, many modern replacement components are manufactured primarily to a price rather than for long-term performance and reliability.
Poor materials, inconsistent manufacturing and incorrectly calibrated components can lead to difficult starting, poor running, reduced performance and unnecessary maintenance.
I originally designed our EFI system for my own vehicle. As development progressed, however, it became clear that there was an opportunity to create a genuinely comprehensive solution for other Series Land Rover owners.
Designed Specifically for the 2¼
Our EFI system isn't simply a generic EFI system adapted to fit a Series Land Rover, it has been developed specifically around the Series 2¼-litre petrol engine, its characteristics and the requirements of the vehicle.
Rather than bolting together a collection of aftermarket components, we have designed a complete system where the individual components are selected and developed to work together.
The result is a fully adjustable EFI and electronic ignition system designed to improve starting, drivability, performance, efficiency and reliability while retaining the character of the original engine.
What Does It Replace?
The system addresses many of the weaknesses associated with the traditional setup, including:
- Points and their associated maintenance and wear
- Distributors with worn or incorrectly calibrated advance mechanisms
- Poor-quality or distorted carburettors
- Inconsistent fuelling
- Difficult cold starting
- Components that require regular adjustment
- Poor-quality replacement parts that can fail prematurely
By replacing these components with modern, high-quality alternatives, the EFI system provides far greater control over both fuel delivery and ignition timing.
More Than Just EFI
This isn't about turning a Series Land Rover into a modern sports car - It's about making the original engine work better.
We want to retain the character, simplicity and charm of the Series Land Rover while removing some of the frustrations that come with the original fuelling and ignition systems.
The system is fully adjustable and owner-accessible, making it easier to understand, diagnose and maintain. It is designed as a complete package rather than a collection of unrelated aftermarket parts.
The Benefits
Easier starting.
Smoother running.
Better throttle response.
Improved performance.
Improved efficiency.
Greater reliability.
Less maintenance.
Most importantly, we want to give owners confidence in their vehicle.
Results
On a standard, well worn Series 2a, 3 MB 2 ¼ engine we saw 42% increase in power, 10% increase in torque and a massive 58% reduction in Fuel consumption. Not only did it use less fuel, it was also able to hold faster road speeds. The stock worn engine with carb and dizzy would hold 45mph on the flat, dropping to 35mph on a hill and 50mph on the down hill.
With the USP EFI kit we can now hold 60mph comfortably on the flat, 55 mph uphill and down hill……… Well we didn’t see how fast it would go but I would say it will continue way past 75mph if you’re brave enough.
Turn the key. Start every time. Built With Reliability in Mind
My background in military vehicle engineering, combined with experience developing performance products through Ultimate Twin Performance Ltd, means we understand the importance of reliability, serviceability and quality, and every component has been selected with those principles in mind.
Installation & Support
We will offer professional installation at our workshop, as well as fitting at your home. For owners who prefer to install the system themselves, we will also provide technical support and guidance throughout the process.
Our aim is to make the upgrade as straightforward and accessible as possible, whether you want us to do the work or prefer to fit the system yourself.
This isn't about changing what makes a Series Land Rover special.
It's about making it better.
